True to form, in a city often thought of as a collection of unique villages as opposed to a cohesive metropolis, there can exist an extreme social divide between nonprofit organizations, even those with similar goals. Victor Carreon, known in nightlife and philanthropic circles as the inimitable DJ Limbs, decided to act.

His brainchild, Music is the Weapon, has begun: a series of hip-hop, soul, house and funk parties created to highlight and fundraise for nonprofit organizations and encourage them to get out and network with the public and one another. The first installment—at the elegant Between Lounge in Wicker Park—was wildly successful, and set a precedent for how one can incorporate an old-school hip-hop party atmosphere with altruism, leaving patrons simultaneously rocked and informed. The night is produced with the Boogie Knightz Cru and Huyen Tran.

Demand for more has taken hold. Music is the Weapon 2 will feature two non-profits—Chicago Independent Radio Project, a media advocacy group, and Rumble Arts, a Humbodlt Park community arts center. Each get their own booth to disseminate information, a bottle of champagne courtesy of Between Lounge and a chance to speak on the mic about their cause. At the night’s end, 15% of the bar’s gross (usually the DJs’ take), plus donations, are split evenly between the two groups. Joining Limbs are local phenoms DJ Dishwasha and DJ Aroc. Although the DJs spin everything from dusty grooves to dubstep and jungle, the event is firmly rooted in hip-hop culture.

“There are so many great nonprofits around town and one thing that always comes up when I talk to artists and groups is how the scene is still more segregated than we’d like,” Carreon muses. “This is my way as a DJ to celebrate nonprofits and bring groups around Chicago together. On top of all that, it’s a hype party with great DJs.”

Carreon brings a broad perspective to his work as a DJ, music producer and sound designer. Having lived in Geneva, Switzerland, and Manila, Philippines, his collaborations span from a Brazilian singer/songwriter (Ruth Vallera; helped write music for R. Kelly and Smashing Pumpkins, and produced Anacronica and Copacobana Club in Curitiba, Brazil), to a rapper in the Philippines (Nimbus 9) and local up-and-coming artists in Chicago (AMS, Zirafa, Nadia Alfadel, Magnum Exel), San Francisco (Spinnerty), Las Vegas (Krukid) and New York (Murdertronics). In Chicago, he’s pulverized decks at Alive One, Liar’s Club, Evil Olive, Quennect 4 and The Art Institute. His sound swings from milky and contemplative to raucous and infused with a palpable visionary energy.

Music is the Weapon 2 happens at Between Lounge, 1324 N. Milwaukee, 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday, December 12. Free admission. A little more info about the event:
Music...

Coming in two weeks! A little more info about the event:

Music is the Weapon is a party for NPOs. My goal’s to raise funds for the participating groups, promote their cause, and create a space for networking opportunities. I also want to celebrate their choice of work and fuel the drive for everyone attending to pass it forward. Each group will get their own booth/table where they can pass out material, accept donations, sell merch, build mailing lists and party up with their peers and a free bottle of champagne courtesy of Between. Groups are also encouraged to get on the mic and represent their cause. Everyone is invited to come, learn about each NPO, dance and buy someone a drink as 15% of the bar goes to the group that brings the most people. I really hope this event is a success, and if it picks up speed and a buzz, I plan to blow it up, find better bar deals, bigger spaces and more ways to use the party atmosphere to funnel energy and resources towards those who work for the cause alone. “Music is the Weapon 10” will be on some next level-ish.

While organizing for HipHop Congress in my college days, I used to talk to one of my guys Matt Harsh, about how some of our best, most inspired ideas came up during a party or at a bar. There’s something about the vibe (blame it on the a-a-a-a-alco-hold up nahhhh) that seems to conjure ideas that weren’t expressed at our weekly meetings. Many of them became our best events. Come through and experience that. Plus, the music will be bumping. Man-O-Wax’s funk collection is top notch, and I consider myself a pretty dope DJ of many styles for getting parties going. Be on the look out for the first “Music is the Weapon” mixtape featuring interviews from each NPO that’s participating this time round. And once again, please come out to the event and spread the word! PEACE - dj limbs

Music is the Weapon @ Between Lounge Sept 17th

My first (of hopefully many) fundraiser parties is coming up next month. I really want these groups to benefit from participating so please come out!

Music is the Weapon @ Between Lounge
Sept 17th 10-2AM
1324 N Milwaukee Ave
Chicago

FREE entrance, purchases at the bar raise funds for non-profits!

We all like to gather and party to good music.
We also like to be a positive force whenever we can in our lives.
Here’s an opportunity to do both.

DJ limbs is featuring three non-profit groups to participate in the first of many fundraiser events he is hosting at Between Lounge on September 17th, 2009:

En Masse Chicago - www.myspace.com/enmassechicago
Connect Force - www.connectforce.org
Original Change Project - www.originalchangeproject.com

Each group is doing great work for their respective communities in Chicago. Come out to party and help them raise funds at the same time. The more you buy at the bar the more they get!

limbs spins funk, soul, hiphop, downtempo, house and that hype new new when the energy levels gets there…throughout this night, he’ll be sprinkling in tracks from our favorite revolutionary theme songs present and past to remind people of the power music has to inspire change.
